1. Supporting Black and Minority Ethnic colleagues
Each day seems to bring new data about elevated risk, and therefore concern, for BAME key workers during COVID-19. The commitment to address both the evidence and the concern is absolute. NHS Employers have just issued useful advice on how the issue may best be addressed by health service organisations. Reviewing that suggests the Trust is already doing all of this best practice, although we need to check that that work is happening everywhere. However, if you remain concerned and wish a new Risk Assessment of your work practice to be carried out, or an existing risk assessment to be challenged, please do any of the following three things:
· Talk to your line manager who will work through the options with you
· Contact our HR advice line on ext 3116 who will work ‘independently’ with you
· Contact tobylewis@nhs.net who is the executive sponsor for the Trust’s Black and Minority Ethnic Staff Network, who will oversee work to support you
The organisation would welcome your ideas and suggestions of any more actions you believe that we should consider, and you will have seen prior advice on underlying health, including vitamin D deficiency on which we are exploring active research trials.
2. Birmingham’s Treatment Centre: Recover-ready?
Over the next few days we are putting in place changes to help us re-start some planned treatments and undertake more diagnostic work. We have around 4,000 people waiting for surgery, and 8,000 whose scans need to be done and reported.
Nursing and cleaning teams, and a few managers too, were in to help begin the Big Clean Up which carries on tomorrow. Our #greenshoots programme is all about restoring public confidence in care. Thank you to all involved…
3. Recharge: Let’s learn from you
The Recharge Booth will be open every Thursday from 2pm for 20-30 minutes to hear a different story each time from a colleague who has put themselves forward to share an experience that they want to talk about – it can be anything but likely to be COVID-19 related to begin with. We start on Thursday May 14th – get in touch with Claire Hubbard and Richard Burnell if you want to know.
This #welearn project is designed to help build psychological resilience by sharing.
4. Our role model! Handwashing Jacqueline claps clean
Next week is our special Trust handwashing week. We want to know how you do it, how many times you do it, why you do it, and how to get everyone doing it. Senior Sister Jaqueline Slater set the handwashing benchmark at 70 last week.

Share your pictures and upload videos of handwashing best practice on Twitter @SWBHnhs with the hashtag #SWBCleanHands (in line with our social media guidance please).
It only takes 20 seconds to save lives…
