Update: Blood orders in Unity

Pathology IT have now resolved the incident which was stopping new duplicate lab orders from appearing in Unity. Ready, steady, go! – Our mock move week went full steam ahead!

This week, HCR and our external stakeholders joined members of SWB for mock move week. It is a crucial milestone in the project and an opportunity for colleagues to practice their departmental moves before our site moves begin in October.

Putting move protocol into practice, teams including maternity, critical care, paediatrics, neonates, and City and Sandwell general patients participated in mock move week.

Naturally, this experience enabled colleagues to observe how things worked, with an opportunity to assess and adjust their plans and take learnings away before patient moves commence.

With particular interest for his team, Interim Lead Chaplain, Eddie Briones, was delighted to view the space and was impressed at the potential for the people and population of SWB and wider communities.

Eddie told us: “I’m really excited to move in on day one. I envision this space as a place of holistic healing for patients, colleagues and the communities we serve. We can’t wait to welcome everyone into the space.”

  • Professional Development Nurses

Who is Oliver McGowan and why is his training important?

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training. The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that regulated service providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role. The Oliver McGowan training is the Government’s preferred and recommended training.

Why was the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism developed?

Oliver’s training supports the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan ambition by upskilling the wider health and care workforce to provide appropriately adjusted care for people with a learning disability and autistic people to reduce health inequality.

Together we can prevent the many avoidable deaths like Oliver’s from happening again. The animation below aims to help staff and employers across health and social care to understand Oliver’s training and why it is so vitally important.

What does this mean for me as an employee of the Trust?

We are committed to making a difference and achieving high standards of care and patient experience for all patients living with learning disability and autism. Oliver McGowan training is now being introduced as a mandatory requirement for all staff.

To find out more information about Oliver McGowan, you can visit the website here.

Any questions regarding the training dates, please contact Rujina Begum, r.begum19@nhs.net

Our fab new labs! – We celebrate the new Midland Met Cath lab installation

Recently, our brand new, state-of-the-art cath labs were installed at Midland Met.

We’ve captured some fantastic behind the scenes footage of the team during the installation process.

Following this, we spoke to Director of Research and Development and Consultant Cardiologist – Professor Derek Connolly, about the positive impact the new cath labs will have on patient care after we move to our new hospital.

Professor Connolly commented: “Currently, it takes a long time to get from City to the cath labs and even longer coming from Sandwell. However, at Midland Met departments are much closer together, making it easier to treat patients more quickly.”

Take a look at the incredible installation of our new cath lab.
