NEW Programme: Data Foundations for Managers
BPP are thrilled to announce, following the relaunch of our Data Foundations programme and the success of our new Data Foundations for HR Professionals, that we will be launching a brand-new Data Foundations for Managers programme in February 2024 as part of our new Data Foundations series.
The programme is designed to empower your managers further by elevating their data skill set by focussing on the untapped potential in Excel and Power BI as well as elevating their leadership and management skills.
What your candidates will learn:
- Learn to analyse data more effectively and gain improved insights to optimise team performance, efficiency and operations.
- Learn automation to improve reporting accuracy and save time; giving managers time back to put in to coaching and developing their teams (our research shows almost 400 business hours can be saved annually automating a single manually built Excel report).
- Learn visualisation tools and storytelling techniques to ensure insights and analyses are communicated effectively, for maximum business adoption and impact.
Leadership Masterclasses:
- Foundations of good coaching.
- Resilience
- How we lead in a volatile, complex, and ambiguous world.
- How to drive peak performance across teams and the wider business.
- Role of leadership and how we build high performing teams who consistently achieve exceptional results.
The above combination makes this a fantastic programme to complement leadership training options and as its available fully government funded.
Please note a study leave form and approval by your line manager will be needed to participate in this course.

The event is free and open to all and includes entertainment activities for children and light refreshments.
Tuesday 31 October 2023 from 12.00 pm – 3.30 pm at The Legacy Centre,144 Potters Ln, Birmingham, B6 4UU

Change of laboratory IT system: 24 October, 6am – 1pm
Please be aware that blood sciences at SWB will migrate to a new laboratory information management system (LIMS) on Tuesday 24 October from 6am – 1pm which will affect the pathology service at Sandwell and City.
During the upgrade, Unity will remain available for viewing historical results; however, there will be no transmission of new results to Unity between 8am – 9.30am, therefore there will be a delay in receiving electronic results. During this time the laboratory will prioritise the most urgent requests from A&E, critical care, AMU, coronary care and paediatrics/neonates and urgent and abnormal results will be phoned through to the requestor.
From 6am – 1pm toxicology, chemistry, haematology and immunology orders will need to be placed on paper forms. We ask services to support this by only placing urgent requests during this time. Pathology staff will be onsite on Monday (23 October) and Tuesday (24 October) to provide additional paper forms if required. Please call 0121 507 6600 if you require additional paper forms in hours. If you require additional forms out of hours from 6am to 8am then please Bleep 5401 for CNPs or call the capacity office on ext. 4880.
Results transmission to Unity will re-commence from 9.30am, including those generated between 8am – 9.30am however electronic requesting will remain unavailable until 1pm. Please do not use “Add-On” requests during this time.
Please be aware that any paper requests submitted from 6am to 1pm once reviewed by pathology will be manually booked in by pathology. These requests will come back as unsolicited results in Unity and will require the requesting clinician to endorse.
The activity will be closely monitored, and desk top alerts will be issued from 5am advising colleagues of the need to revert to BCP for requesting chemistry, haematology and immunology requests during the maintenance.
Significant clinical changes can be found by visiting the pathology connect page.
Should you have any further queries then please call the pathology on 0121 507 6600 or email on swbh.pathology-it@nhs.net.
Do you know about the self-service smartcard unlock functionality?
Following the release of the new self-service smartcard unlock functionality in September over 25 per cent of all smartcard unlocks are now performed via self-service. We estimate over 200 hours per day of time has been saved across the smartcard estate with this new service.
As a reminder, this service is available to all staff with email addresses linked to their CIS profiles, eliminating the need for a visit to a registration authority. No prior registration is required.
Smartcard holders can automatically use the new application if they have a valid email address on their care identity profile. This means:
- There’s no need to register
- There are no security questions to remember
- Nobody needs to take their card to a Registration Authority to have it unlocked
- Everyone can access the application using a regular internet connection
The service is accessible either clicking here.
Further information and troubleshooting is available here.
Could you help us find a missing delivery?
We have had an order of x3 FeNo monitors and one box of mouthpieces go missing and we are still trying to trace their whereabouts.
The order was signed for by Sandwell stores and sent with transport to Regis Medical Centre but it was never received. The company they were originally from is called Intermedical. They were delivered on Thursday 3 August and would have been transported between the 3 – 4 August.
If you know where this missing delivery may have gone, please contact Olivia Rochelle in the procurement team on 0121 507 4695. Please also see photos below of the delivery.
Have you thought about entering the welearn QI Poster contest?
We have launched our welearn quality improvement poster contest. This is now firmly established as an annual event and forms part of our welearn programme of learning and knowledge sharing across our organisation. The welearn QI poster contest aims to share good practice, quality initiatives, innovations, research and partnerships that have resulted in improvements for our patients, carers and colleagues. There is a prize of £5,000 for the winner, and £250 each for the two highly commended posters and popular staff vote – so definitely worth taking part.
Entries are encouraged and welcomed from everyone, whether you work with patients or provide non-clinical support. We are looking to see improvement projects and programmes written up and captured in a poster. Don’t be put off by this because help is available. Medical Illustration will provide support to design and produce the poster and you can discuss your ideas on content with the library and knowledge services team.
Visit the Connect pages for the guidance document, the poster template and also listen to the previous year’s winners about their experience of the process and how quality improvement brought about a positive impact on their services and patients.
Be sure to also check out this short video featuring Lee Walker, Improvement Project Manager, who alongside Tahmena Karim, Chizo Agwu and the Learning from Deaths Committee created a poster around improving our the Trust mortality ratios.
Closing date for the poster contest is Friday 17 November.
If you need help with your submission or designing your poster, contact the library team and medical illustration team by emailing swbh.welearnposters@nhs.net.
Congratulations to our Employee of the Year, Huma Naqvi
Last Friday we held our 2023 Star Awards where a total of 13 awards were handed out to both clinical and non-clinical colleagues across SWB.
Our awards ceremony, which was held at Aston Villa Football Club, aims to recognise the hard work and dedication of our colleagues and volunteers, both on the frontlines and our supporting services.
Today we recognise our 2023 Employee of the Year, Dr Huma Naqvi.
Huma was appointed as the first ortho-geriatrician in the Trust around ten years ago, and since this point she has managed the whole orthogeriatric service single-handedly. She has a number of key responsibilities, such as managing the hip fracture management protocol, supporting the general surgery abdominal surgery patients in line with national protocol, and managing junior doctors in trauma and orthopaedics for several years now. This latter responsibility includes rota planning, training, teaching and mentoring.
Dr Naqvi is also the wellbeing champion for clinicians in the Trust and goes out of her way to support colleagues. On top of all this, Dr Naqvi is also the training programme director for the geriatric service.
