Staff Survey is open – your voice counts
Looking ahead, our wish is for SWB to be a workplace in which colleagues can realise a healthy work/life balance, to feel safe and respected and to feel fulfilled. A place where people seek to work, in which they feel a sense of pride and a workplace in which everyone thrives.
We are committed to making this happen but need your help!
The annual NHS Staff Survey has been aligned with the People Promise. A promise to ensure that every voice is heard from every background and across every role.
The NHS People Promise
This is a promise we must all make to each other – to work together to improve the experience of working in the NHS for everyone.
- We are compassionate and inclusive
- We are recognised and rewarded
- We each have a voice that counts
- We are safe and healthy
- We are always learning
- We work flexibly
- We are a team
We ask and urge you to participate as it is only by speaking out that we can collectively create change.
We will listen, we will hear, and we will act. This is our promise to you!
Find out more about the people promise by clicking here.
Be sure to check out this short video from Simon Morley, Trust Convenor encouraging colleagues to complete the staff survey.
If you have any queries or have not received your survey please contact Quality Health 0800 783 1775 or helpline@quality-health.co.uk
The survey will close on 25 November.
Chief Operating Officer role
Message on behalf of Richard Beeken, Chief Executive:
“I am delighted to confirm that Johanne Newens has been appointed to the role of Chief Operating Officer.
Johanne emerged as the stand out candidate through a competitive national search process, internal stakeholder panels and an interview process which involved two external assessors. We had nine very strong applications who were longlisted for the role. Johanne’s commitment to supporting the Trust in achieving our objectives was evident throughout the process. Johanne served as the Deputy COO at SWB for the last two years, having come to us from The Dudley Group NHS FT, where she was Divisional Director of Operations for Medicine and Emergency Care.
Our Chief Operating Officer will be a voting member of our Trust Board, leading service delivery for all our hospital services and having Board oversight of IT & Digital services, through Martin Sadler’s role. Johanne will be working closely with the Chief Integration Officer, Daren Fradgley, who is the executive lead for community and primary care services and Place Based Partnerships. Johanne will also be working closely with Liam Kennedy, who has moved on secondment to the role of MMUH Delivery Director. Liam will be responsible for oversight of the delivery of the MMUH care model and workforce plan and will work as Rachel Barlow’s deputy. We are delighted to retain Liam’s knowledge of our Trust and the Midland Met for the duration of the programme, right through to the opening of the hospital in Spring 2024.”
Living Wage Foundation – increased payment in October wages
The Trust is a long-standing member of the Living Wage Foundation where employees commit to paying their staff the Real Living Wage. This is higher than the national government minimum wages that are set for adults and is based on real living costs.
New real Living Wage rates were announced on Thursday 22 September and, as part of our membership, we are required to introduce the new rate as soon as possible and by May 2023 at the latest. The new real Living Wage rate applicable to all areas outside London is now £10.90 per hour – more than the national minimum of £9.50 per hour.
Our Trust has agreed to introduce this new rate of £10.90 per hour for our lowest paid workers during the month of October so staff should expect to see this increase reflected in your October pay. We are among a minority of NHS organisations who are committed to the Real Living Wage that reflects cost of living increases and are proud to be able to honour this commitment as soon as the new rates were announced.
For more information on the Living Wage Foundation and how the rate is calculated please click here.

AHPs Day this Friday
Friday 14 October is Allied Health Professions (AHPs) Day! It’s the annual opportunity for AHPs and support workers to come together and celebrate being part of the AHP family.
AHP Day also serves as a platform to showcase some of the amazing work that happens by Allied Health Professions within the Trust and further afield.
Allied Health Professions are a group of healthcare professionals from 14 different professions, making up the third largest healthcare workforce.
Here at the Trust we employ 10 of the 14 professions which include diagnostic radiographers, speech and language therapists, operating department practitioners, dietitians, physiotherapists, orthotists, orthoptists, paramedics, podiatrists and occupational therapists. We do not currently employ osteopaths, music therapists, drama therapists or art therapists.
Over the course of this week, we will be celebrating two professions each day leading us to the National AHP Day on Friday. Be sure to check out this featuring Wajid Hussain, Specialist Lead Podiatrist and Joseph Ferris, Occupational Therapist.

Please click on this link to take you directly to the survey, which will take less than 3 minutes to complete. This survey will close on Friday 18 November.
October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month
Domestic Abuse Awareness Month aims to help raise awareness and end the stigma of speaking up against domestic abuse.
Colleagues are encouraged to offer resources to anyone you think may be in an abusive relationship. The high volumes of patients we serve can be challenging and we may feel like we are not always able to ask the direct questions.
Below is the SWB screening tool for questions which should be asked where there is any suspicion of abuse.
- Q: Do you ever feel afraid at home?
- Q: Does a partner, ex-partner or anyone at home often put you down, humiliate you or try?
- Q: Have you ever been hurt or threatened by a partner or anyone at home?
- Q: If indicated yes to the previous question, could you tell me how/why you got those injuries?
Our independent domestic violence advisers are available in A&E for any queries and support:
- City: Sarah Markland, ext. 4829, mobile 07866 004529
- Sandwell: Lesley Marshall, ext.3787, Mobile 07929 653014
