The Recharge Booth
The Recharge Booth is a ‘virtual’ space that allows you to come together with others, reflect, recharge, decompress, and join a safe and confidential discussion. Hosted by Richard Burnell, it runs every Thursday at 2pm, sharing stories from different colleagues over a 20-30 minute session.
This week the Recharge Booth will focus on the following story:
“I am working from home and finding it strange. There is an element of isolation that is quite difficult to deal with but also the problems of having the children here and not being around colleagues seems to make everything much harder. There’s definitely benefits to this but I am not sure I am making the most of it. I think I need some strategies about how to manage the mental side of living in my office!”
For more information please contact Richard Burnell on 07747 144874 or Claire Hubbard on 07866 004575. Alternatively if you would like to be part of the Recharge Booth, drop an email to swbh.rechargebooth@nhs.net. A WebEx invite will be sent to your outlook diary, and you will simply need to click on the ‘join’ button to enter.

Star of the Week – Eoin Dore
Our Star of the Week Award this week goes to Eoin Dore, ACCS CT2 anaesthetics and CT anaesthetics trainee rep.
Eoin has been instrumental in developing and publicising an extensive wellbeing programme throughout the Trust. Whilst this is primarily directed at the trainees, it has been open to all colleagues and consequently everyone has reaped the benefits. He has helped provide rest facilities on D20 and is a constant source of trainee morale boosting. He is also the anaesthetic department junior doctor rep where he organises forums and teaching. Heartbeat: Live and Work Programme highly commended nationally
Congratulations to the live and work team for being highly commended by the NHS Sustainability Awards.
The team were recognised for the programme developed with St Basils (a homelessness prevention charity) which provides apprenticeship opportunities and living accommodation within our workplace to young people (aged 16 – 24) who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It was designed to break down barriers and build bridges with young people within the local community, enabling them to benefit from the additional support the package offers.
Olufemi Kuforiji (Femi), Widening Participation Project Support Officer told Heartbeat: “We were absolutely thrilled to be recognised in this way. This commendation demonstrates the commitment of everyone involved in the programme especially the young people themselves.
“We are currently supporting 21 young people undertaking apprenticeships in our workplace. Their roles include customer service, healthcare assistant and admin. They are all excelling in their roles and on their way to securing permanent positions in the organisation.”
Lawrence Kelly, Widening Participation Project Lead explained how the programme is an essential part of the support we deliver towards our commitments to integrated care in our community.
He said: “The success of the programme has enabled us to engage with other employers and community networks such as local construction, Balfour Beatty and Vinci along with local authorities and probation services.
“With the EU exit creating uncertainty over the possibility of recruiting health professionals from abroad, ensuring a flow of new talent into the NHS is ever more important and the Live & Work NHS Apprenticeship Programme has been very instrumental in the development and recruitment of young people despite the challenges.”

Are you up to date with your anaphylaxis training?
The e-learning module can be accessed by clicking here.
Why is this training needed?
- Clinical colleagues who give parenteral medications should have regular updates in dealing with anaphylactic reactions.
- The Health Protection Agency recommends that staff who give immunisations should have annual updates in anaphylaxis.
- Clinical colleagues should be familiar with the equipment and drugs they have available and should check them regularly.
- Adrenaline must be readily available in clinical areas where anaphylaxis could occur.
- The aim of the initial treatment is to keep the patient alive, and achieve some clinical improvement. This will buy time for further treatment and expert help.
Please ensure the location of the anaphylaxis and emergency medications is clearly identified with the following sticker:

The tissue viability team
Dr Maria Atkinson nominated Dr Halton for producing easy reference guides in the clinical management of children and young people.
“In my role as clinical director, I have disseminated a significant amount of information, including on changes to the way that children and young people are cared for during the pandemic, said Dr Atkinson. “This has included guidance on issues such as children awaiting retrieval by the regional ITU team, and the use new equipment.
“Without prompting, Dr Halton collated all of the relevant information and pulled it together into a single electronic booklet. She even went to the detail of providing pictures of new equipment, such as ventilators, and details of how they work, as easy reference guides.
“This resource has been very well received, and has been invaluable for locums working within the department.”
