International Year of the Nurse and Midwife: Paula Gardner

This month we shine a spotlight on Paula Gardner, our Chief Nurse as part of International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. This is a campaign by the World Health Organisation in honour of the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.

Nurses and midwives play a vital role in providing health services in our workplace. They devote their lives to caring for mothers and children; giving lifesaving immunisations and health advice; looking after older people and generally meeting everyday essential health needs. They are often the first and only point of care in their communities. Throughout the year we will be highlighting some of our nurses, HCAs and midwives who are making a difference to our patients.

Today we are sharing a video of Paula. She has lots of fantastic memories of nursing and has praised our staff for the hard work they do.

Do you now a nurse, HCA or midwife who is gong above and beyond to deliver quality care? Contact the communications team  swb-tr.SWBH-GM-Staff-Communications@nhs.net

Is it time to reconsider your relationship with alcohol?

How would you describe your relationship with alcohol? We all have our own relationship with alcohol, but it’s something that we might not stop to think about all that often. Taking time out from regular drinking has many associated health benefits.

If you’d like to assess how much alcohol you regularly consume you’ll find lots of useful resources on the occupational health page. As well as this, you’ll find a guide packed with facts and figures about alcohol. You can also download an app called Drink Less via the app store. Download it at http://apple.co/1U8UDI5

Have you completed your mandatory training?

Time is running out for all colleagues to ensure they are 100 per cent compliant for all of their mandatory training.

Being up to date with mandatory training is essential to ensure that we are safe at work and that our patients are safe in our care.

It is a contractual requirement, and therefore a responsibility, for everyone in our Trust to have completed all relevant mandatory training for their role. It is also a requirement to ensure that any refresher training is undertaken before the training period expires. If you’re not in date with your mandatory training you will:

  • Be unable to progress through your next pay increment
  • Be unable to achieve more than a performance level 2 on your Aspiring to Excellence personal development review.

Being out of date could also lead to notification of failure to complete mandatory training to your relevant professional body or potential disciplinary action.

To easily access your e-learning, see the link to the mandatory training e-learning guide.
