Clarifying the difference between digital champions and super users
We’re aware that there has been some confusion about the difference between digital champions and super users. Both will receive additional training to increase their knowledge of Unity, and will play important roles during go-live, but there are significant differences to be aware of.
Digital champions will have received extra training on Unity in order to support their colleagues during go live. In addition to end-user training, they will have also completed a soft skills and a classroom session, lasting a total of one-and-a-half days. They will be rostered during go-live to help in their areas.
Super users are a step above digital champions, and will have an enhanced end-to-end knowledge of Unity to be able to help colleagues from different areas. They will not be rostered at go-live, instead acting as an extension of the Unity support team, helping out wherever required.
As well as end-user training, and both parts of digital champions training, super users will have done three further individual training days looking at patient journeys, and a half-day CAPMAN course where applicable.
It’s important to familiarise yourself with the digital champions and super users in your area. Keeping a list of both, along with pictures, in your Unity corner is a good idea. Having a list of which digital champions are rostered and when during the ten days following go-live will also help.
If you have any questions about digital champions and super users, or require further clarification, please email swbh.unity-champions@nhs.net.
Heartbeat: Rad Ready to improve patient journey in imaging
The imaging department is launching a new initiative across the Trust called Rad Ready.
Rad Ready essentially means that our patients are fully prepared for their imaging test so that on arrival within the department they can go straight into the scanner or x-ray room without delay.
The initiative has been developed to support the rapid turnaround times that imaging has pledged to deliver:
Patient type | Rad Ready time pledge |
Emergency department | 1 hour |
In patient | 24 hours |
2 week wait | 5 days |
Outpatient/GP urgent | 5 days |
Outpatient/GP non-urgent | 28 days |
Fiona Rotherham, Deputy Group Director of Operations – Imaging, believes that to achieve these pledges, it’s essential that our patients are Rad Ready to avoid any delays prior to the imaging taking place.
She said “CT has been identified by the imaging team as the modality that would benefit the most by patients being Rad Ready and as such a pre-scan checklist has been designed to support ward teams in ensuring that their patients are fully prepared prior to arriving in the CT department.”
The checklist will ensure that the patient:
- Has had the required fluid intake
- Has had the required oral contrast
- Has an appropriate and functioning cannula in situ
- Has had any required pain relief and/or sedation
- Has an accompanying interpreter as required.
Our improvement team will be visiting all ward areas to familiarise colleagues with the Rad Ready concept and the pre-scan checklist. In addition the radiographers and assistants within CT will be on hand to answer queries as they arise.
Fiona added “The use of the pre-scan checklist will be regularly audited to assess effectiveness and I am certain Rad Ready will help improve turnaround times, make better use of available scan time and ultimately provide faster diagnoses”.
Unity maintenance – single document capture affected: 13 July 7.30pm
As we prepare to go live with the upgrade of Unity on Wednesday 26 August we are upgrading single document capture.
We have deliberately chosen a time to do this change where the single document capture function is not in great use in order to minimise impact.
Unity will remain operational however there will be no ability to scan documents directly in to Unity and archived reports will be unavailable.
Should you have any queries please contact the 24 hour IT helpdesk on ext. 4050 or 0121 507 4050 for home workers.
Meet our smokfree enforcement officers
Meet Ryan Hanley and Rafal Brzezinski, two of our smokefree enforcement officers. You may have seen them patrolling the sites already in their distinctive red uniforms.
They will be enforcing the smoking ban across all outdoor areas, including in cars parked on our sites. We are working in partnership with SafetyNet Security Group.
Ryan said: “We will be patrolling all three sites ensuring that they are kept as a smokefree zone.”
Be sure to check out this short video featuring our smokefree enforcement officers.

Ensure your ‘Unity – it’s all about U’ checklist is complete
As we continue our preparations for go-live, it’s essential for everyone to fill in the relevant ‘Unity – It’s all about U’ checklist, which outlines the core requirements for using the system in your role. You can do this through Connect.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to fill in the checklist but the majority of colleagues still need to do so. As of 1pm on Wednesday the overall completion rate across the organisation was 37.24 per cent. Here’s a breakdown of that figure by group:
Please answer the questions honestly. Nobody’s trying to catch you out and there’s nothing wrong with not knowing how to do something. Filling in the checklist will simply show you and your manager where you are with Unity and help to identify any support you might need to ensure you’re up to speed with the system.
For more information about the ‘Unity – it’s all about U’ checklists, please contact the learning and development team on swbh.landd@nhs.net.
