Smokefree: Your comments and questions

Our Trust has now become smokefree, which means no smoking on any of our sites. We support vaping on our grounds, but not in our buildings or entrances.

It is our collective responsibility to ensure that people do not smoke anywhere on our sites, and in this we will be supported by dedicated smoking wardens who will be patrolling our sites, and by an external company who will police our ban through an on the ground presence backed up by CCTV. The maximum ban for anyone caught smoking on site is £50, and this includes smoking in cars on our premises. Colleagues who receive three fines will be subject to disciplinary procedure.

Vaping will be allowed outside, and as the smoking shelters come down we will retain a small number which will be converted into vaping shelters. These shelters will be monitored by CCTV to ensure they are not used for smoking.

We are following Public Health England guidelines in being supportive of vaping as a route to cut down or quit smoking.

Two vaping shops are now open at City (main spine, ground floor) and Sandwell (outpatients area) Hospitals run by ECigWizard, where colleagues will be able to get advice about vaping products and purchase them. We are also making Nicotine Replacement Therapy widely available, so patients will be able to access it through clinical colleagues on our wards and from our pharmacy department.

Be sure to check out this video featuring our Chief Executive, Toby Lewis addressing some of the topics and questions raised as we move forward with our smoking ban.

‘Unity – it’s all about U’ – last day to achieve 100 per cent compliance

Today is the last day for you to not only complete the ‘Unity – it’s all about U’ checklist, but to do so demonstrating 100 per cent compliance with the requirements for your role. You can do this through Connect.

Remember that there is now e-learning available for everyone – nurses, doctors, ED and AHPs. It’s easy to register and complete any of the packages to enhance your knowledge of Unity. You can also use them just to practise and build up your confidence.

Please ensure you complete your ‘Unity – it’s all about U’ assessment a second time if you were not 100 per cent compliant the first time you completed it, and make sure you do so today. If you have any concerns, talk to your manager who will support you to find a solution.

For more information about the ‘Unity – it’s all about U’ checklists, please contact the learning and development team on swbh.landd@nhs.net.

Give your colleague a shout out

Shout out is a way for colleagues to be recognised for their excellent work.

The shout outs we will publish on Connect will be a mixture of patient feedback (from our website and social media) and shout outs from colleagues.

If you believe a member of your team, or someone from elsewhere in the organisation deserves a mention, then head to Connect and give them a shout out.

They may have gone out of their way to help you with something or you may have witnessed them make a difference to a patient or colleague.

Each month we will choose a top shout-out and the winner (and their nominator) will both receive a £10 voucher.

A selection of shout outs will also appear in Heartbeat.

If you have any questions about shout out, please contact the comms team on swbh.comms@nhs.net or extension 5303.
