Heartbeat: Students impressed with Windrush exhibition – which is Here to Stay
Students from Sandwell College recently took a tour of the photograph exhibition Hear to Stay which captures the Windrush generation nurses who have worked in the NHS.
The group visited the exhibition in the Education Centre at Sandwell Hospital where the Here to Stay collection is on show and will remain for the foreseeable future.
The pictures were taken by photographer Inės Elsa Dalal. They celebrate nurses, past and present, who have worked at our Trust and other NHS organisations, and is a way of thanking them for their contribution.
Donna Mighty, Co-Chair of the BME Staff Network, invited the second year HND photography students to the exhibition.
Donna, who is also Assistant Primary Care Liaison Manager, said: “We want to ensure that members of the community are able to see these very important photographs which acknowledge the Windrush generation.
“We are grateful to all the participants for agreeing to be involved in the project, for giving their time and sharing their stories with us. So it is only fitting that we are able to share their experiences with others.
“It is great news that we will now have a permanent home here in the Education Centre and as a result we will be organising more viewings of the exhibition. We are urging those who are interested in seeing the collection to get in touch.”
David Waldron, Photography Tutor, said: “Our photography students were very interested in seeing the exhibition.
“I think they portray a real warmth of the individual in each photograph. There’s a lot of photography nowadays which is serious and those featured look very separated from their environment. But here, everyone looks very proud, happy and comfortable to be photographed.
“We teach photography students how to work on projects and sets of images and so getting a collective together like the Windrush generation pictures, is an ideal example for them.
Student Elliott Smith, 20, added: “It’s a really nice exhibition with a nice set of portraits. I think their stories are well told with just the pictures alone.”

Caring Vikki fulfils a childhood dream
Featured in Chronicle Week:
BORN and bred in West Bromwich, senior sister Vikki Howard has been dedicating nearly 20 years to ensuring the local community is well looked after.
Vikki dreamed of becoming a nurse when she was aged just 10 and qualified before she turned 20. Now, 15 years later, Vikki is the lead for a new medical ward at Sandwell Hospital, run by Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.
The senior sister is immensely proud of her NHS journey. She said: “l love being a nurse and I’m so grateful that I have been supported all the way by the Trust to pursue my childhood dream.
“I’m now managing Lyndon 5 ward, which recently celebrated its first anniversary. We look after elderly patients and aim to provide the best possible care.”
Since the ward opened, Vikki and her team have achieved incredible results to date. She smiled: “We ensure that all aspects of care are delivered with the highest standard and we have successfully implemented a new safety initiative which is something we are really proud of.”
Working in a new and fast-paced environment might be a challenge for many people, but not for Vikki. She explained: “I’m fortunate to have such a great team, where everyone supports each other to deliver the best care possible to patients.
“It’s so wonderful to see how we make a difference to those in our care and their relatives by carrying out simple acts. I always spend extra time sitting with patients and offer them a cup of tea, or I am there for their relatives should they need a shoulder to cry on.
“For me, caring is not just about physically looking after patients, but also making sure they are ok mentally. I always treat them like they are my family.”
Besides her clinical work, Vikki focuses on looking after the next generation of nurses. She has been mentoring many qualified nurses. She beamed: “I love watching my mentees grow and develop their skills.
“Many junior nurses that I used to look after have now become senior nurses, which makes me so proud.”
Vikki is currently working with the recruitment team on its current campaign, which will see a jobs fair held on 1 December, at City Hospital.
She said: “As our team is now expanding, I’m looking to recruit more talented, enthusiastic, and compassionate nurses to join my team.
“Our team’s culture is all about embracing changes and we are determined to succeed.”
When not at work, Vikki enjoys spending time with her 11-year-old daughter by taking her to theatre.
So who is Vikki’s NHS hero? “It has to be Debbie Fretwell, who is a Matron at the Trust. She is formidable and she taught me to become a good nurse. I’m forever grateful to her help.”
