NHS 70: Before and after

The first photograph above is of “Matron Ashworth and Assistant Matron Harding with sisters” and was taken at the Sandwell hospital site in 1927, when it was known as Hallam Hospital.

But fast forward 91 years and the health service is a very different place.

The re-enactment, taken in the exact same spot, outside what we now know as Trust HQ, shows a more multi-cultural and modern NHS.

We released the photographs to mark the 70th birthday of the NHS.

Even though the old picture was taken 19 years before the NHS was established it still captures the beginnings of what went onto become one of the most valued health care systems in the world.

We will have more old pictures on show at our tea party at Sandwell Hospital today. Head over to the Berridge Suite between 10am and 2pm to take a look.

A chance to win a piece of movie memorabilia at hospital’s NHS70 party

The tie worn by the Hollywood character Christian Grey in the hit movie 50 Shades of Grey will be up for grabs at our NHS70 celebrations.

The piece of movie memorabilia will be one of the raffle prizes at Sandwell Hospital’s “Big 7Tea” party held on Thursday July 5 between 10am and 2pm.

Money raised from the raffle will go Your Trust Charity, which helps to improve the patient experience at our organisation.

Tickets to win the tie, which has a letter of authenticity, along with a hamper, will be available at the party held in the Courtyard Garden.

The tie was donated by the actor Jamie Dornan, who plays Christian Grey, to Consultant Gynaecologist Gabrielle Downey, who is good friends with his father.

The event is to mark the 70th birthday of the NHS and there will also be food including cakes, sandwiches and samosas, entertainment, and stalls from various specialities.

A special exhibition of old photographs will also be on show at the party, which is aimed at patients, visitors and staff.

Meanwhile City Hospital, will play host to a Unison-funded celebration on July 5, where there will be a holiday raffled off.

The prize will be for Unison members only, however, there will be other gifts available to everyone, including a watch, chocolates and a bottle of wine.

The City party will provide entertainment for children, and there will be music from a steel band. A huge variety of food and refreshments will also be available between 11am to 4pm at the event held outside the Birmingham Treatement Centre.

If you are unable to attend the Sandwell party, you can be in with a chance to win the tie. Go to https://www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/swbh/nhs70 for more information.

Alternatively, if you are unable to attend the parties, you can also throw your own party, and raise funds for Your Trust Charity. Go to https://www.swbh.nhs.uk/about-us/nhs-70/ to find out more.
