Update on IT systems
The issues affecting IT clinical systems are becoming resolved and we hope to have most of our systems up and running towards the end of the afternoon.
Business continuity plans are in place and working well meaning that we can safely care for our patients, prioritising urgent and emergency care. We have strategic and tactical command in place to manage this incident.
Important information for clinical teams
- Pathology
The pathology team are prioritising diagnostics for urgent and emergency patients. Results will be phoned through to wards / departments. If you need to contact the pathology service please phone or use the bleep system. Make sure the patient’s location is clear on the request form.
- Imaging
Plain film images and scans are not able to be viewed currently on wards or in service areas. They can be viewed in the imaging department where there is radiology support for urgent reporting and to discuss results or view films. To make contact with the department please phone or use the bleep system.
Historic lab and imaging reports are still available through CDA.
Communications
We have floor walkers in place on our sites. Messages will be emailed out to colleagues and additionally, our floor walkers will be out spreading messages to wards and departments with the latest information.
You can escalate any issues of concern to tactical command as follows:
- Tactical Command Sandwell – Lead: Caroline Rennalls
- Tactical Command City – Lead: Michelle Harris
- Strategic Command – Lead: Rachel Barlow, Chief Operating Officer

Colleague expectations during inclement weather
It is likely that we will continue to see freezing temperatures, icy conditions and heavier snow over the next few days. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.
We have a robust plan in place to allow our services to continue, without disruption for patients, however it is important that colleagues make every effort to report to work for their allocated shifts.
Please think ahead about different options for your journey:
- Do you know what public transport is available?
- Are there any colleagues that you can car share with?
- Could you walk to work if you live close by?
If, after making every reasonable attempt, you are unable to attend work; your manager will discuss the following options with you:
- Flexibility – you will be asked to pick up a shift where there is a gap in workforce, in the near future
- Work from home (if your role allows this to be a viable option)
- Annual leave
- Flexible working
- Unpaid leave

Screening for sepsis starts today
March 2018 will be bringing some changes in our organisation for Sepsis; here are the changes that will affect you:
- NEW Sepsis Screening Stickers – All patients with a EWS of ≥5 will need to be evidenced as screened for sepsis by ticking the relevant box and attaching the sticker in the patient’s notes. The rules will be advertised on the Sepsis Connect page or on your ward and you can also download a handy poster below.
- An updated sepsis screening and action tool will be introduced.
- All patients who fit RED flag sepsis MUST have the sepsis 6© completed.
- Unity, our new electronic patient record system, will have a sepsis module to aid in the screening and treatment of sepsis.
