Unity Walkthroughs
During February and March we’ll be holding a series of Unity walkthroughs. These are an opportunity to check that our business processes work with the new IT system. The business processes informed the development of the system but there’s nothing like running through them with the actual system. We’ve completed Cardiology and Neuro-physiology and will work through the feedback.
Pancake Day – 13 February
Head along to Archers, Boaters and Hallam Restaurant on Tuesday 13 February for a pancake (or two!)
You can get a plain pancake for just 50p or just from cherry or sugar and lemon for an extra 25p.
Educational Meeting – w/c 12 February
Next week will be a session from the Educational Faculty Development Programme – How to Identify Learning Needs – Dr Imtiaz Ahmed
Aim of session:
- To discuss indicators of training needs
- To highlight the importance of identifying learning needs before preparing for a teaching session:
- Who needs to be trained
- How many need to be trained
- To what standard
- Why identify learning needs
- Performance
- Motivation
- Knowledge
- Discuss the importance of identifying the learners objectives from the session
- Discuss the methods that can be used to identify learning needs
- Formal – as part of appraisal / supervision process
- Informal discussions with groups with review of learning objectives from courses
- How to plan a training programme
The session will be held in the Postgraduate Centre at City Hospital on Monday 12 February, 12.30pm start and will be repeated in the Education Centre at Sandwell on Thursday 22 February.
Also next week will be the Diabetes & Endocrinology Grand Round – ” Reducing Insulin errors and improving DKA management – Is it practically achievable? “
The session will be held in the Education Centre at Sandwell Hospital on Thursday 15 February, 12.30pm start (12noon lunch)
Road Closure – BMEC Car park
From Monday 12 February until Friday 16 February the road between the eye hospital car park entrance and the junction opposite the old nursery at City Hospital will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This is for essential infrastructure works.
Access to the Main Visitors Car Park and Eye Hospital Car Park will therefore only be possible off Western Road via the main visitor car park entrance by hearing services.
Catering special – Chinese New Year – 15 February
The catering department will be holding a Chinese New Year special on Thursday 15 February in Hallam Restaurant, Arches & Boaters. The menu is below:

Medical infusion centre to open at weekends
The medical infusion suite based on D42 at City Hospital will be opening a seven day service starting 2 April

Sleep Hygiene and Relaxation Techniques Seminar
Problems Sleeping? Do you want to be able to sleep better and feel better for getting a good night’s sleep?
The Sleep Hygiene and Relaxation Techniques Seminar will help you identify what can lead to sleep problems, and understand the effects of insufficient sleep. We will look at how our sleep is affected when we are stressed and anxious, and how we can soon pick up bad habits and unhelpful associations. We will create an individual sleep routine, whilst highlighting all the self-help of how to get that ‘Good Night’s Sleep.’ It will also involve practical techniques for relaxation and mindfulness.

Ash Wednesday
A service of the imposition of ashes will be held at 12.30pm on Wednesday 14 February in both Sandwell and City hospital chapels.
