Bissu, Calalai and Calabai
February is LGBT History Month and the LGBT Staff Network are using the month to share an insight into the geography of LGBT history looking at the gender diversity through time and cultures.
Today we highlight: Bissu, Calalai and Calabai:
The Bugi people of southern Sulawesi in Indonesia recognise three sexes (male, female and intersex) and five genders: men, women, bissu, calabai and calalai. Bissu are considered a “transcendent gender”, either encompassing all genders or none at all. The Bissu serve ritual roles in Bugi culture and are sometimes equated with priests.
Calalai are people assigned female at birth who gender identify as men.
Calabai are people assigned male at birth who gender identify as women.

Anxiety management group
This will be a psychoeducational group, facilitated by the Physical Health Psychology Team the Integrated Care Services Team based at Rowley Regis Hospital.
The group will be aimed at people who are having problems with anxiety. Anxiety must be the main presenting issue. They may be experiencing symptoms such as panic attacks, restlessness, racing thoughts, excessive worrying or disturbed sleep.
Before making a referral, please consider the client’s ability to engage in a group and whether they will be motivated to attend all sessions. It is also important that clients are willing to try out new strategies to manage their anxiety. We will not accept referrals for clients who have a longstanding history of anxiety and are known to mental health services.
If you need to discuss any issues relating to a client’s risk levels such as self-harm or suicidal ideation (non-urgent/ general discussion) please contact the psychology office on 0121 507 6376 and ask for a qualified member of staff. For urgent risk issues please contact patient’s GP.
The four week programme will run on Thursdays from 10am-12pm at Rowley Regis Hospital.
If you would like to discuss a referral or gain further information about the group, you can contact Psychology on 0121 507 6376 or Joe Ferris / Cheryl Coley 0121 507 2664 (option 5).

Making reasonable adjustments to healthcare
Following on from a patient identifying an equalities act violation it has been highlighted that we do not always make reasonable adjustments to help our patients access the health care services they need.
Did you know that you can place a flag on patients records in Lorenzo to identify that they have additional needs, for example, if letters need to go out in large print and on yellow paper. Please follow these simple steps:
1. You go into the patients record
2. Right click and select patient alerts – if no alerts select ok
3. Right click on alert box , select new alert
4. Drop down box appears
5. Choose the communication need option
6. Populate the text box with patients’ needs
7. Click ok and it is then saved to the records
This is a quick and simple process that allows us to identify the individual needs of our patients, it is important that we all ensure that any flags are acknowledged and we follow the guidance from them with each interaction with the patient.

Changes to new starter process
On 1 March, the information that managers are required to complete to notify ESR/Payroll that a new employee has commenced will change:
- New starters will need to be hired by the manager via ESR self-service on the day the employee commences; this will send a notification to E-Rostering if required.
- All employees will require access to NHS Mail, please ensure the Request a New IT user account form is completed on Connect.
- An electronic form located on the ESR connect page called new starter personal information will need to be completed by the employee to provide payroll with their bank account, tax and pension information.
- The employee will need to access employee self service (users must have an NHS mail account to do so) to update their emergency contact and diversity data; this will also ensure they can view their payslip online as well as complete mandatory training.
- The current appointment form on connect will be removed.
If you currently complete appointment forms via connect and do not have access to ESR please contact s.sutton2@nhs.net and request access to manager self-service.
