Are you looking for the best treatment to lower your blood pressure?
If you are between 18-65 years old, you could take part in a project looking to see if treatment for high blood pressure should be ‘personalised’. Blood pressure experts, supported by the Medical Research Council and the British Hypertension Foundation, are running a clinical trial that will help find the best treatment for each individual.
You must have high blood pressure as described by your GP and can be on up to three antihypertensive drugs. You will be screened before being accepted onto the study. Once enrolled you will be asked to attend the Institute for Cardiovascular Sciences every four weeks.
For more information, please visit the Ancestry and biological Informative Markers for stratification of Hypertensionour (AIM HY) website. Alternatively email Ronnie.haynes@nhs.net or rebeccabrown15@nhs.net or call ext 6657/5113 and ask to speak to a member of the AIM HY team.

LGBT History Month – Mahu
February is LGBT History Month and the LGBT Staff Network are using the month to share an insight into the geography of LGBT History looking at the gender diversity through time and cultures.
Today we highlight Mahu: Long before Captain Cook’s arrival in Hawaii, a multiple gender tradition existed among the Kanaka Maoli indigenous society. The mahu could be any sex, but taking on a gender role somewhere between, or encompassing both, the masculine and feminine. Their social role is sacred as educators of ancient traditions and rituals. The arrival of Europeans and the colonisation of Hawaii nearly eliminated the native culture, and today mahu face discrimination in a culture dominated by white European ideas of only two genders.

Learn a Language and make a difference to patient care
Colleagues are being offered the opportunity to learn a language in an effort to support each other and our patients to breakdown communication barriers and improve our patients’ experience. For patients, being in hospital on their own and being unable to communicate unless an interpreter is present may feel very isolating and cause additional stress and worry. Having someone speak a little of their language to ask “do you want a cup of tea” or “the shower is this way” or just to say “hi” and be a friendly face can make a real difference in how our patients experience our services.
The learn a language programme can be delivered flexibly to suit the needs of employees. We have had a good response to the Heartbeat article and will be reviewing requests in the next few weeks.
If you haven’t yet responded but would like to be considered, please email or write a short paragraph explaining the language you would be interested in learning, where you work and how you think this would help patients to the below by Friday 23 February.
