Chief Executive’s Message – Friday 31 January

Chief Executive’s Message – Friday 31 January

January 31, 2025

Notice: Undefined variable: image_url in /home/communications/public_html/wp-content/plugins/ht-feature-news/ht_feature_news.php on line 473

Yesterday, it was a pleasure to host the Chair of NHS England, Richard Meddings to Midland Met – although he visited areas of the hospital which he was very impressed by – his visit was very much focussed on hearing about our integrated clinical care model, which means local people get high quality care, in the right place, at the right time and by the right people.

We explained just how we are doing this – by splitting our pathways equally between community and acute services, which will support us in keeping in line with the recent NHS England planning announcement focusing on delivering faster treatment for patients – including for planned surgeries and emergency care.

Integrated care remains high on the agenda and community first is one of our Trust’s key objectives.

We are already performing well in this area through collaboration. Prime examples include the care home wrap around in Sandwell and West Birmingham and the opening of Harvest View which is a health and care facility promoting independence. It provides dementia beds, intermediate care and extra care and is recognised nationally as an innovative partnership model between our organisation and Sandwell Council.

I wanted to share the quote that Richard issued post his visit with you all. He said: “During my visit to the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, I was deeply impressed by the warmth and dedication of the staff.

“The innovative community-based care model here offers valuable lessons for others across the NHS. Particularly striking was the promising improvement in managing admissions for the most frail and elderly in the community.

“It was also great to see the leadership at the Black Country ICB, where I joined a Board meeting to hear about the financial challenges it faces and its performance on key operational indicators.

“Thank you to everyone at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust and the Black Country ICB for your exceptional work and commitment to patient care."

In other news, I’m sure you will have heard by now that next week will be launching our new staff portal, SPARC. While Connect has served us well for several years, we need a new platform which better suits the needs of our clinical and non-clinical colleagues. SPARC will be accessible on both your computer and smartphone device and will be the best place for you to access all the latest news and stay in the know with everything across the organisation.

There is a step-by-step instruction guide of how to download the app to your smartphone which you can access by clicking here. In the meantime, should you have any queries around the platform, do reach out to anil.patel11@nhs.net and hermione.crump@nhs.net from the communications team.

And finally, we have now received over 640 nominations for the 2025 Star Awards which is fantastic – and is going to provide our judges with a challenge. However, there is still time to get nominations in by the end of the day.

If you haven’t done so already, get thinking about those colleagues who have gone above and beyond over the last 12 months, been part of something extra special or made a positive difference to the way we work or the quality of care our patients receive and ensure you put them forward for an award.

I look forward to sharing the shortlist with you over the next couple of weeks.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Diane.

A reminder of drop offs for community bloods

January 31, 2025

Notice: Undefined variable: image_url in /home/communications/public_html/wp-content/plugins/ht-feature-news/ht_feature_news.php on line 473
Due to the relocation of pathology labs from City and Sandwell sites, community blood requests need to be transferred to be processed at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH). This ensures they will have the appropriate turnaround time. For this to happen it is important for them to be dropped off at the correct places. Community bloods need to be dropped off at Sandwell Pathology, Rowley Regis or the drop box in ED at MMUH. If they are dropped off elsewhere they risk being transferred to the wrong site for analysis which will delay and possibly compromise results.

Are you verifying your agency worker IDs?

January 29, 2025

Notice: Undefined variable: image_url in /home/communications/public_html/wp-content/plugins/ht-feature-news/ht_feature_news.php on line 473
The NHS Employment Check Standards mandate that all individuals, including temporary agency workers, undergo thorough identity verification before commencing any role within the NHS. A department/clinical area should verify the agency worker's identification documents when they arrive to undertake any duties within the Trust. The identity verification process involves several key steps:
  1. Requesting Identification documentation: Workers must provide photographic identification on arrival within the department/clinical area
  2. Induction check list: This must be completed and retained by the department clinical area.
The induction checklist link can be found by visiting  https://connect2.swbh.nhs.uk/trust-bank-shifts/ For more information please email veenamasih@nhs.net.

Major universities visit Midland Met

January 29, 2025

On Tuesday 21 January we welcomed universities from across the region for a tour of our new hospital. With ‘university’ in its official name, Midland Metropolitan University Hospital is already associated with four major universities in the area. These are the University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University, Aston University and Wolverhampton University, who all had lecturers and other representatives in attendance. Additionally, we were glad to welcome members from Birmingham Newman University, University of Worcester and University College Birmingham, who had been excited to see the hospital for many months. Education Lead Nurse, Theresa Morris, commented: "Many of the universities in the area have been very excited in the lead up to opening and afterwards too. We’ve had so many questions and such a buzz around moving. The coverage on our social media channels and in the news has been fantastic. It was lovely for some of our nursing students to join the tour too, alongside their universities.”

Increased Incidence of Spuriously Raised Potassium Results

January 29, 2025

The Black Country Pathology Services have recently been experiencing an increased incidence of samples with potassium results above the reference range. Whilst many of these will be spurious, a few may be genuine and therefore, we advise that an urgent repeat sample is obtained. This issue may also result in under-reporting of hypokalaemia and therefore, we advise clinical vigilance. The cause is a delay in centrifugation after sample collection. We are taking the problem very seriously, and have a working group in operation, but it is complex and may take time to fully resolve. We believe the cause is multifactorial with the contributory factors listed below. 1. Some GP surgeries are sending samples in bags rather than in Indexor racks. We would like to maximise the number of samples sent in Indexor racks and still have some available. Please contact rwh-tr.indexorsupport@nhs.net if you send samples to the lab in bags and would like to be considered for Indexor. Indexor racks speed up processing when the sample arrives in the lab. 2. Some GP surgeries/phlebotomy hubs are not sending all available blood samples each time the transport arrives. Please may you ensure that all available samples are sent when the transport arrives. Please do not wait until a later transport or until the Indexor racks are full before sending them. We advise making phlebotomists aware of transport times so that they may place samples at the point of collection 10 minutes prior to the assigned transport time. Shafi Azimi and Harvey Matoo, from the BCPS GP liaison team, will be contacting Practice Managers to arrange a visit to discuss the steps that may be taken to minimise spuriously raised potassium results. They may be contacted on shafiullah.azimi@nhs.net or harvinder.matoo@nhs.net. 3. Transport times may be longer owing to the transfer of GP samples to the hub laboratory at Wolverhampton. Some transport routes involve the use of Pick Up Drop Off (PUDO) locations and reliance on transportation services from more than one organisation. Longer transport times will be particularly problematic in cold weather. Exposure of unseparated samples to the cold is a well-recognised cause of spurious hyperkalaemia. We have just finished a temperature audit of the longest transport route, including the PUDO locations, to inform potential mitigations. We may have to consider alternative transport routes but some of these are not currently under the control of the BCPS. 4. The time to centrifugation, once the sample arrives in the laboratory, is longer than previously, owing to the very high workload at the Wolverhampton hub laboratory. This may be contributing to spurious hyperkalaemia – particularly if the samples are exposed to cold temperatures following collection. Potential solutions include working with our equipment supplier to improve throughput and equipment uptime, reviewing lab processes, smoothing out peaks in sample arrival by changing transport provision and relocating work to other labs within BCPS. Use of Indexor racks and sending samples on the earliest available transport, following sample collection, help us to better process work. We apologise for the issue with the high number of raised potassium results and appreciate the impact on patient care. We hope that we can work with you to rectify this difficult situation. If you require further information, please contact clare.ford1@nhs.net or telephone 01902 695286.
